Arrest of a Man in Omonia in Possession of Stolen Gold
The Greek police arrested a 35yearold foreign national in the Omonia district of central Athens after discovering that he was hiding stolen goods inside a small shop used as a suspicious business front.
Authorities confiscated from the store and the hotel room he had been renting six gold chains a gold sovereign a gold ring and an amount of money exceeding €12000. Police also found two precision electronic scales a gold purity testing device five kilograms of tobacco and 30 electronic cigarette packs without the required excise tax label.
The operation followed a covert surveillance carried out by officers of the Criminal Investigation and Prosecution Department of Agios Panteleimonas with the assistance of the DIAS police unit. It was revealed that the suspect had been receiving and disposing of proceeds from multiple crimes in clear violation of national customs legislation.
The suspect was referred to the competent public prosecutor for further investigation and legal proceedings.
