A passenger plane experienced an engine fire shortly after taking off from Corfu Airport on Thursday, prompting an emergency landing at Aktion Airport on Greece’s western mainland.
The Boeing 737-800, operated by budget airline Smartwings, departed Corfu at approximately 5 p.m., bound for Brno in the Czech Republic. Minutes after takeoff, at an altitude of around 1,500 feet, one engine failed and caught fire.
Corfu’s Ioannis Kapodistrias Airport was immediately placed on alert. Following established emergency protocols, the crew maintained a controlled flight at about 4,000 feet before safely landing at Aktion Airport near Preveza.
