Beware of modern fraud: The new method that could threaten your bank accounts in Greece

In the Greek city of Larissa fraudsters have once again pushed their imagination to new limits inventing eversmarter ways to steal money from unsuspecting citizens — this time with a more cunning and lowrisk approach.

After a series of scams involving fake traffic accidents and phone calls posing as “paybyclick” technicians a new method has recently emerged. This latest scheme requires no physical contact or direct collection of jewelry or cash.

According to a documentary audio investigation published by onlarissa.gr the new scam targeted a woman in Larissa. The scammer who introduced himself as Nikos Andrianopoulos claimed to be an employee from the EFKA office. He called the victim saying she was entitled to a prepaid card worth €450 that could be used for withdrawals from ATMs or for shopping at major stores.

But the trick didn’t end there. The scammer told her that to activate the card she needed to “enter a few codes.” He then instructed her to go to a nearby kiosk and purchase Paysafe cards claiming he needed the codes printed on them. Once she bought the cards and shared the numbers he effectively obtained the money — without ever meeting her or leaving a trace.

This time however the situation took an unexpected turn. The victim remained calm and decided to record the entire conversation which eventually exposed the fraudster and revealed his method to the authorities.

Experts warn that such online fraud tactics may continue to evolve especially with the growing use of paybyclick services and digital transactions linked to bank accounts. They urge citizens to be cautious with any call requesting financial details or activation codes — even if it appears to come from an official source or a wellknown bank.
