Europe Enters a New Digital Border Era Starting October 2025
Starting October 12 2025 the European Union will launch the Entry/Exit System EES replacing paper stamps with a digital record that tracks entry and stay periods across Schengen countries.
The system uses biometric data including fingerprints and facial recognition to improve border security and enforce the 90/180day rule for travelers. It will be rolled out gradually covering most EU and Schengen states by mid2026.
Registration will be possible at passport control selfservice kiosks or official mobile apps. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprint collection while visa holders’ data will be recorded at issuance and visafree travelers at arrival.
The EES marks a turning point in European travel promising faster more accurate border checks but travelers must understand the new rules to avoid delays.
