Shocking Surprise in Lemnos: Shark Spotted on Agios Ioannis Beach
Beachgoers at Agios Ioannis Beach in Prassa on the island of Lemnos experienced moments of fear on Saturday morning August 23. Waves carried a large fish onto the shore that looked very similar to a shark.
According to Radio Lemnos the fish was not dangerous. Locals call it “Soapfish” and it is harmless to humans. It usually lives in deep waters and rarely comes close to the coast.

Reports suggest the fish may have been injured by a boat propeller leaving only one large piece that was washed ashore.
Scientifically the fish is known as the Hexanchus shark also called the sixgilled shark. It is a protected species which explains why it is rarely seen in shallow waters or near beaches.
