Greek Parliament approves Tough Migration Law with Harsh Penalties and 10-Year Ban
The Greek Parliament has approved a new migration and asylum bill titled Reform of the Framework and Procedures for the Return of ThirdCountry Nationals. The aim is to strengthen state capacity against illegal migration limit abuse of the asylum system and accelerate deportation procedures.
The law criminalizes illegal residence in the country with prison sentences ranging from two to five years and a minimum fine of €5000. It also abolishes the possibility of legalizing status through longterm residence of seven years. Stricter controls have been imposed on subsequent asylum applications to prevent abusive practices.
The law reduces the voluntary departure period from 25 to 14 days introduces electronic monitoring and extends administrative detention from 18 to 24 months without suspensive effect of appeals. It broadens the definition of the return country sets strict criteria for flight risks and establishes a mandatory entry ban of up to ten years in cases of threats to public order or security.

Migration and Asylum Minister Thanos Plevris stressed during the debate that Greece will not tolerate illegal stay. He clarified that those eligible for international protection will receive asylum while rejected applicants will face either return or penalties.
This new framework aims to ease pressure on asylum and police authorities direct resources toward those genuinely in need of protection and safeguard Greek society.
